Abstract

This study explores the theme of divine light throughout Psalms 1–40, suggesting that references to light in the psalms form a unified spiritual path that guides believers from initial enlightenment to ongoing participation in God’s uncreated radiance. Emphasizing Eastern patristic exegesis and Gregory of Nyssa’s epectasy model, the research views light not just as a metaphor but as an ontological and soteriological reality: a theophanic presence, sacramental power, and transformative grace. Focusing on nine key psalms (Ps 4:6; 12:3; 17:31; 18:9; 27:1; 30:16; 35:9; 36:6; 37:20 – LXX), the study demonstrates a progression: God’s face imprinted on humans (restoring the divine image); awakening the ‘eye of the heart’ (spiritual sight and discernment); receiving commandments as luminous forces that illuminate and direct moral understanding; and contemplative vision leading to ontological deification. Patristic writers (Origen, Cyril of Alexandria, John Chrysostom, Gregory Palamas) support a Christocentric and Trinitarian interpretation in which the Father is perceived through the Son as Light, and the Spirit transmits luminous energy. The psalms thus offer both experiential theology and practical guidance: continual prayer for light, ascetic obedience, participation in liturgy and sacraments, and communal discernment. Ultimately, the paper contends that Psalms 1–40 outline an epectatic journey in which illumination serves as a gift, a duty, and a goal—shaping, testing, and transforming the believer into the likeness of the One who is Light.
